Homepage mobile score was increased from 7 to 55 points

Homepage desktop score was increased from 28 to 79points

What was done?

  • Cleared security logs -- dashboard became faster
  • Cleared Activity logs -- Activity plugin is not even there anymore, but logs were still stored in the database
  • Optimized database tables
  • Overly, database size was shrank 4 times without deleting useful information
  • Some resources were pointing to staging euromachinerynyt.cmswordpress.dk and were unavailable
  • We coded it so Country Selector plugin loads only if there’s its shortcode
  • This is an unusual WooCommerce website: we have a lot of products, but don’t actually sell them. So, some shopping functions such as add to cart, payment processing, etc are unused. We removed them.
  • Deactivated Preload font code in Custom code plugin - this font is already loaded by another plugin
  • Styles are adjusted to use less icon sets
  • Got rid of unused styles & scripts
  • Size guide plugin does not seem to be used, so are a few other plugins
  • Duplicate requests are gone
  • Base.css was significantly reduced
  • Ensured text remains visible during webfont load
  • Email encoder plugin seems to be used, but it’s not very important & sends unnecessary AJAX queries, so it was disabled
  • Fancy boxes are built into the theme, so we don’t need Easy FancyBox plugin
  • WP Popups Lite loads only on contact page now -- it’s used to pop up sales manager cards
  • .htaccess is full of rules, bans, redirects and other junk accumulated over years. I cleared it up and server response time improved significantly. We highly recommend someone in charge of the website to see the old .htaccess (called .htaccess1) to see if some rules should be brought back.
  • Gutenberg loads only on blog pages now
  • Performance plugins are set up
  • Detect browser language function is turned off. English is the default language (we can change it) and then users can change their language using switchter in the header.

Suggestions

  • Currently euro-machinery.dk redirects to euro-machinery.dk/en
    Redirection takes a lot of time, so it has to be turned off.

    Also, it’s supposed to be bad for SEO: currently on live website there’s no homepage, homepage always redirects to some local version.
    We kept redirection, because popups on contact page don't work if there's no /en/ URL. Website developer should address this issue and remove redirection - this change alone will improve performance a lot.
  • Raise memory limit, there are a lot of heavy plugins, so it’s necessary.
  • Latest version of the theme has some useful settings for performance, so the theme is better to be updated. We could not do it on staging because we don’t have a license for this domain name.
  • PageSpeed is not happy about Product filter plugin, but it doesn't seem like something can be done about that.
  • It's a good idea to use Cloudflare and, along with removing redirection, this change can push website into yellow zone on PageSpeed.
